In concept, adventure mode is more fun to me because it doesn't require as much effort as fortress mode and is freer in where you can go. I also play it more because I'm too lazy for fort mode.

That being said, fortress mode is more fleshed out, so at the moment it is far better in its array of activities you can do. I think that after this release they'll be equal.

And there's something to be said about adventuring through an old fort, because that's the epitome of both modes.

Live long if you can, and prosper by any means necessary.  Any means, Urist.  So pull that lever, or by Armok, I'll lock you outside come next siege.
He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.

Fortress mode is great too, but too much micromanagement, and too addictive.
That's the reason why it's my favorite mode!  :P

Adventure mode has come a long way but is still not really a game yet, so, fortress mode by a mile.

Compare to games like Hammer and Sickle, a Russian-developed X-Com style of game.  In that, I might do something like see an enemy ambush up ahead, and decide to get the drop on them first by climbing in the window of one of the houses stealthily, and killing the soldiers in there, before using my main character, a sniper, to start picking off the enemy snipers before they can shoot him by taking advantage of a high stealth rating.

I don't think Fortress mode combat is ever going to play like a tactics RPG – such direct control of your characters goes against the general thrust of the mode, I think. I'd be happy if it played something like a small-unit Total War game, though. Even having your squads prefer to keep in some semblance of a formation and obey orders would be a big step.

Fortress Mode, while Adventure mode is fun and all there are countless adventure games (from roguelikes to full on AAA titles) out there that are amazing, however while there are a fantasy kingdom simulators out there they are few and far between and I have yet to find out with the level of detail and freedom (and immersion) that DF Fortress Mode offers.

I consider Arena and Legends to be more like appendixes to a book,  you reference them when you want information but they aren't really 'games' by any common definition.
