Cave River Formation Strangeness 33g
« on: December 23, 2007, 03:24:00 pm »

Cave river formation seems to have a few hitches, and can result in some very odd cave rivers.

I just found one that doubled back on itself and resulted in placing the chasm that it falls into in the middle of the level above which feeds the rest of the river. It ended up making most of the cave river residents fall into the chasm, and the entire river except for the short portion leading up to the chasm dried up. Instead of a multi-level river eventually flowing into the chasm, it's flowing directly out of the source and into a chasm a couple tiles away.

can you place a bridge or something under the waterfall to redirect the water?

I don't really understand what's going on here. The water is flowing uphill to its end-chasm, which is a level above the source?

This is a normal cave river: It starts at S, the source, flows to the right, drops down a level, continues flowing, etc. Eventually it comes to the end, and falls into the chasm (which is actually a pit going down multiple z-levels, but still its a fall straight to the chasm).
code:

S>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
            >>>>>>>>>>
                     ####

This is my river:

code:

S>>>>>>>   >>>>>>
          <<<<<<
      ####

Its flowing out from the source, dropping down a level, then turning straight around and creating the chasm in the middle of the river before it. This is causing the entire right side to dry up and the left side to just fall into the chasm straight away instead of running the regular river route.

The problem might not reside in the river itself, but from the look of it from the fact that a rift was allowed to "spawn" under the route of a cave river in the map creation. Which lead to the strange behavior that you're describing...

True, but a river that flows back under itself is pretty strange, even if you consider that there's a "floor" between them.

In this case the "rift" is the end of the cave river which forms normally, only it penetrates through the separating floor and causes the river to fall prematurely. It wouldn't look so odd if it had that separating floor still there and simply flowed forward and then back and then fell, but the way it is leaves a big dry section of river and kills most of the river residents on map start. When I broke into the river there was like 30 dead creatures that suddenly popped onto my list, and only 5 still alive sitting on the dry side.

I've had a cave river zigzag under itself a couple of times. It starts offscreen, goes on for awhile, drops a few levels, goes in the reverse direction under the original course, drops a few more levels, resumes going in the original direction, then drops a few more levels into the chasm.
