I never do. Even if that involves waiting for the last paralysed dwarf to starve to death, I wait it out to the end.

For me, it's obviously doomed situations (like the time the embark happened right nxt to a chasm and in the first ten minutes batment and ratmen started killing everyone and interruptions x9000), aquifers that weren't supposed to be there (I hate them) boredom, and fps issues.

I delete 'em when I get bored, or the fortress falls to [insert dwarfy death here].  Okay, and there was that one time with the aquifer in the hillside that utterly killed my FPS...

My fortresses last untill I download the new version and delete the old. My fortresses get reclaimed no matter what! Never give in! I end up with really crazy forts... I swear latest version is brilliant for reclaim, no instant sieges because of high wealth, ghosts if you're not quick to bury the last forts dead, healthcare for saving dwarves who get hurt rediscovering the fort.
