A simple question
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:33:48 pm »

I've seen a few references now to a "loyalty cascade". Can anyone tell me what this is?

This fort really does sit on the event horizon of madness and catastrophe
No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

If a creature kills a member of your civilization, it becomes an enemy of your civilization.

If a creature kills a member of your colony/city/fortress, it becomes an enemy of your colony/city/fortress.

If a member of a civilization or fortress sees an enemy, they attempt to kill it.

If you order your soldiers to kill a member of your civilization, they'll do so. They'll then become enemies of your civilization without ceasing to be members of your fortress. Your other soldiers will then see an enemy of your civilization (the soldier or soldiers who got civilization-kills) and kill them, thus becoming enemies of your fortress. Other members of your fortress will then see those soldier-enemies and attempt to kill them, which, if they are successful, turns them into enemies of your fortress and/or civilization. Eventually, everyone in your fortress is dead or formed into 2 camps, one which is enemies of your civilization and one which is enemies of your fortress, and everyone in one camp will attempt to kill everyone in the other camp on sight.

It's called a "loyalty cascade" because of the described cascade effect and due to how it relates to the apparent loyalties of the involved citizens.

Also, there used to be a glitch where sometimes a demon would lead a goblin siege, only to be attacked by the goblins when they enter the map. This was probably due to a loyalty cascade due to the demon never actually becoming a member of the goblin civilization.

So you can just order the militia to kill, say, your monarch?
I mean, consequences aside, you can do that?

No, because the monarch arrives as a migrant (I think, never got him/her). You can kill merchants though, for the same effect.
