Need mod advice, pets

I have a tundra map Fortress I was kinda messing around with.  No dwarves/elves/humans, just goblins and my original 9.  The metalsmith brought his wife.  Sweet.

The map was Sinister or Terrifying.  An occasional blizzard man, mostly herds of Elk and a pack of ice wolves once in a while.  Turns out the ice wolves give immediate chase when they catch sight of a dwarf, so they were easily baited into a couple cage traps I'd gotten setup.  My one dwarf, she likes ice wolves for their piercing howls.  I want to tame a few to help us against the goblins.  I got the kennel, some raw meat and the animal care job is on ... Maybe I am overlooking something simple in game, but I don't think ice wolves are tameable.  They have a [PETVALUE] tag, but nothing else about being a pet.

So I'd like to mod them so I can keep them as pets.  Never modded anything in DF yet. Comparing the ice wolf to the dog in the raws, looks like I just add in a [PET] tag and I am golden?  Will the [EVIL] tag give me any, hah, trouble?

And the big question, if I make this change in the raw .txt, will it not make any difference unless I generate a new world?

Excellent advice, appears to be working.

Just added the [PET] tag to the ice wolf entry in the raws.  Reloaded my fort and ice wolves showed up on the tame animal menu at the kennel.  Was the Cook who liked ice wolves, so I got her taming them.  She fed them horse bones.

Hmm so all you need is to at the pet tag? Sweet atleast somthing to do with my horde of Ratmen in cages I have :) Now I can start my own ratmen ranch :)

I already have 10bins full of ratmen leather/bone armor and crafts from the attacks. And now my dwarfs can live on it only :) Since the crafts have a very high price and I got a legendary crafter :)

Has anybody managed to capture unicorns? They would make the most awesome fortress guards ever, bar elephants.

i've been trying and failed 3 times now.. hate remaking the world.. i am trying to make creatures not only pets but buyable in the first screen, i was trying a giant rat and giant spider, i changed their propertys so they had new names and what not, but for the life of me i can't get them to show up. is that page maybe limited to 1 page of animals you can bring or am i just doing it wrong.. heres teh text.

Start the filename with "creature_" and change the first line to match and it should be closer to working.

sorry i copy and pasted the wrong file, when i went to post that i saw that mistake and fixed it, though still had copyed the wrong file, its called creature_pet2.txt  and creature_pet2 at the top of the text file though still not working yet.

well it helps to regen the world, tested at work and works fine, thanks ^.^
