Dwarves not storing weapons and armor in racks and stand
« on: January 11, 2007, 12:10:00 pm »

If I inspect an armor stand or a weapon rack with 't', should I be able to see it's contents? I've enabled all item types and materials, I've even tried freeing the room from 'Barracks/Armoury' status. Since there are dwarves with item hauling enabled and 'no job' as their status, it feels like a bug to me.

Also, a question about fortress guards. Do they respond to threats at any part of the fortress or do they only react if they see the enemy? Maybe it's time for a captain of the guard menu, or something along those lines?

Add one more person to the 'build wall' wish list.  ;) I hate having to build supports instead of detailing a nice thick 2 x 2 column sometimes. And something to fill channels with, pretty please?

Again, keep up the great work.

Weapon Racks and Armor Stands no longer actually hold weapons and armor. Use a custom stockpile instead.

As far as I can tell, the Fortress Guard only ever reacts to threats they see. I don't use a Guard, and just keep the Mayor happy with a high-quality bedroom.

Filling channels and building walls would rock.

Awesome, custom stockpiles are working. Thanks for the quick reply.

Someone on the wiki recommended an approach to the FG that I really like.  Basically, I put peasants/green recruits into the FG, so that they can practice and get good at using weapons, armour, and shields.

Only THEN do I put them into squads, so that the soldiers that I can actually command are going to have some experience.  It's counterintuitive because the FG is treated as if it's an elite force.  But if you use them as a practice ground, you can keep your unskilled soldiers out of harm's way.

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

Inenious!
I've never used the fortress guard or built a jail and have had neither noble get unhappy thoughts about it.

Really?  No unhappy thoughts at all?  Mine always get "worried about defense" and "worried about the lack of restraints," though obviously if you have enough other things to keep the nobles happy, you can drown out their worries with that stuff.

I always build a jail mostly because I like arranging the ropes.  Does anyone know what happens if you stay jail-less long enough for actual criminals to go unpunished?  Do they get beaten instead?

The Sheriff/Hammerer will worry about the lack of cages, but it's a minor unhappy thought.  Same for the Mayor and Baron worrying about Fortress/Royal Guards.

I've been playing on a treeless map lately and haven't built a single bedroom 4 years in (I just started on a barracks).  The nobles haven't complained at all about having not a single requirement met.  They will hand out sentences for unmet demands/mandates, though.
