So I have a strange problem. I have my main fortress, a Duchy,and  I'm currently working my way down to pick a fight with some clowns.

Got a little bored, decided to make a different fortress and fuck around for a bit.

Just got back on my normal fortress... and noticed it said ''Soanso, mayor, has ended a mandate.'' Thinking that my Mayor and Duchess were no longer the same person, I opened my nobles screen to correct this.

I am no longer a Duchy. I'm not even a County. I only have a mayor and no duke/count option. My save didn't revert, I'm still slowly building my way through molasses-like FPS to the clowns to pick that fight, I still have 10 million created wealth, 119 citizens....

What the hell? Why would the game randomly revert me back to Mayor instead of Duke? Honestly I wouldn't care much, but Duke is a much cooler title than Mayor.

Did your old Duke die?

I've never had an inheritance in DF before, but this sounds like a bungled inheritance.

My only other theory is that the King's on his way.

Nope. I had one when I saved and quit,  when I came back to that world she wasn't a Duchess anymore. Same person, who used to be Mayor/Duchess, was not just a Mayor. And the King can't be on his way, because I don't have one. My civilization has no important leaders.

Perhaps DF noble titles are like Spanish noble titles: they exist at the pleasure of the King. Since you have no King you can't have a Duchess?

I suggest you submit a bug report.

But I had a Duchess before, and I've never had a king. And I'm not sure if it's a bug or a fluke. I mean yeah it seems to be some sort of glitch, but if it happens to only me then maybe it's some strange fluke and not a bug. I don't know.
