Building lots of wooden bins = crippling fps
« on: April 08, 2008, 06:13:00 pm »

Lately df_27_176_38c has been running intolerably slow.

I can't figure it out, but one thing I've changed in my playing habits was to start building tons of bins and stone blocks (trinkets/stone littering the landscape puts me off from the game - despite being a donor since 2-d version).

I tried an older save and that runs 50-75 fps with 58 dwarf population and 7 soil layers exposed. My game runs 9-14 fps and has just 27 dwarves and 2 layers exposed. Generally speaking, the fortress itself is much smaller.

2.4 GHz Core2Duo 4MB Cache
1024 MB DDR RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB DDR3 (x8 PCIe slot)
VSync set to "Off" Nvidia control panel
VSync set to "Off" in init.txt
Temperature set to "On" in init.txt (or unmodified)
FPS set to "On" in init.txt
Computer was rebooted (to clear memory)

One thing that can DRASTICALLY alter your fps is the pathing routines.  I noticed this when I tried to strip-mine a 2*2 down to the bottom.  At times, when some spots were deeper than others, I could get as few as 15 fps, although I probably averaged overall about 90, with a mode at 100.

So if your dwarves are taking a winding path to get to some stone or wood...

I'll take a look at it at some point.

I had about 30 dwarves when I started excavating an entire mountain. Before I designated anything I was at about 80-90 FPS ( Was a big map ), after designation and subsequent dwarf job pickup I dropped to about 15 until the job was done, at which point it shot back up into the 70-80 range.
