Ubuntu 11.04 top bar annoying.
« on: May 07, 2011, 08:53:23 pm »

I have a netbook. This means I have a small screen. This means that the unity top bar is a PAIN IN THE ASS. Does anybody know how to set it to autohide?

EDIT: Apparently it's not fixable, so I used the "ubuntu classic" option and logged into regular Gnome. However, the desktop's bars' graphics are fubared. Which is to say, they don't display the default theme, but fall back to no theme at all for some reason

For that matter, how does one configure unity interface in general?

Isn't the top bar just another panel? So long as I have at least one panel I can always right click and delete the second...then again I haven't used Ubuntu in awhile (I switched to Linux Mint)...maybe there's a "lock panel" option you have to uncheck first? :S

It is in regular gnome. Not in Unity.

For now I am just using "Ubuntu Classic", but I really wanted to give Unity a chance. Seems I wont, for now, though.

What worries me is that they want to remove regular Gnome login with next version. But I guess we can always add it anyway

I think the latest release was just trying to do too much. The various wonky things with Unity's new interface are justifiable in the long term, but for this release I have nothing but WTF's to say.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'll try using it again in 11.10, but for this release classic interface is the way to go.

You can resize the side bar, it's in the compiz config control panel as backwards as that sounds.  Select the unity plugin, then go to experimental and you can tweak the size.  As for navigating with the mouse only, give keyboard navigation a shot.  I love the winkey + search.

I logged into unity just to check this out. Unless I'm blind (a real possibility) The compiz config control panal doesn't exist in default install - only in a package downloaded separately.

Should be under system settings, although I could have installed it at some point.  If that's what you're after though, install it.

yup, you installed it at some point. Honestly that's one of the less important parts though next to the other things I'm iffy on.

To give credit where it's due though, I recently learned about the different ways to maximize a window. If you middle-click on the maximize icon, it maximizes only the height. If you right click it, then it maximizes only the width. Even cooler, if you press Ctrl + alt + one of the number-keys on the right, you can set a window to a section of the screen. Try it, and you can regulate a window to any half, corner, or full screen by pressing the relevant key.
