Prosthetics and Slave Labour
« on: May 12, 2011, 02:16:39 pm »

First off Prosthetics:
Prosthetics come in different types from a simple wooden arm\leg produced at a carpenters workshop to steam-powered masterpieces produced at a mechanics.  The simplest limbs should give a very low ability i.e. a simple wooden arm gives an "ability to grasp impaired" where as a Mechanical arm makes a dwarf stronger.
Slaves:
Lets be honest here what purpose does a caged goblin serve?  What is its purpose?  Let that be the case no more! I suggest a new building called a slave pen goblin rehabilitation center.  Which ,with the use of a manacle, can be used to turn an aggressive goblin into an obedient and subservient drudge.  While these reformed citizens are unsuitable for skilled labour they're strength and simple mindedness makes them perfect for hauling.

Slaves have been suggested enough times. Interestingly enough, Dwarves currently don't agree with slavery! (ethics)

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Yes, I do want peg-legs for my legless dwarves instead of them being bedridden for life. Perhaps wheelchairs could be produced at the mechanic workshops to allow even dwarves with no legs to go about their business, with the help of an idle dwarf.

As for the slavery, its been suggested many times. I'm sure it will be in the future updates.

Blasphemy! That lazy dwarf can push his own wheelchair with his hands and arms! What's he going to do if he's in the military, get Urist Mcfisherdude to push him out to the goblins?

I want prosthetic hands. My adventure has slain many a bogeymen, goblins, and humans, but his adventure started to stink when he got his right hand caught in a lions mouth. He slayed 7 goblins in 16 moves, but a single lion pushes him to the ground and eats his hand in a single move. Poppycock!

....crutches? My bed-ridden dwarves were given crutches, quickly became legendary, and now walk around just as fast if not faster than their 2-legged companions.

Please search before you post, read the other topics, then use these topics to add onto the idea. This way ideas can evolve instead of being the same ol' debates about the same ol' things.

The RAWS don't say so.

Both of these things are common suggestions anyway. Prosthetic are on the old dev list as well, which means Toady has already thought of adding them in, but hasn't got round to it.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.
What color was the mailman's hair?

Plus do a search for slavery first. You can find alot of threads on it. But to answer your question about slavery best bet is to wait for playable goblins then mod your dwarves to share some of the more fun traits  ;)

Steam-powered prosthetic limbs, eh? Where would the turbine go? And the cistern? And the boiler-stove? Would it be wood or coal-fired? And how would you keep the boiler stoked? Would the steam vent, or would it be condensed and routed back to the cistern? If it vents, how would the water be replaced? And how would it be insulated against cooking the poor dorf's stump into blistering, bloody steak? And most of all, how would the deft and precise movements required of a limb or digit be controllable by the dorf, or would the limb just spasmodicly kick over and over again and he'd have to sort of hop-along after it?

No need for anything like that. With all the booze they drink, dwarves have an unlimited source of power.
