Newb here... bug or feature?

So I finally managed to build a killer fort that for 6.5 years has managed to withstand assaults from all manner of sieging goblins and forgotten beasts.  I would like to explore it in adventure mode or read some of the legends that has transpired since breaking ground so long ago.  When I go to do so, the region is not there.  As an experiment, I started a few other minor forts, worked on them for 1-2 game years, and noticed that they too did not exist in the new game menu. 

However, when I abandoned those forts, ta-da, they appear!! All data intact and apparently ready to explore.  So my question is "Is this intended?"  and "Is there anyway to begin adventure mode without abandoning the fort first?"

A single world cannot have more than one active "game" running at once - if you've got a fortress in a particular world, you must abandon it if you wish to explore it in Adventurer mode.

Yes, it is intended. For any given world, you can have only one mode active at the time - active in the roguelike sense, so having a saved game in progress in e.g. Fortress Mode counts as active. You have to abandon the fort, as you have found out yourself, before you're allowed to play any other mode in this same world.

Of course, as with any other roguelike, savescumming is possible - copy your saves folder with your fortress mode save to some other folder, then run the game and abandon the fort. You can play as an adventurer now, and when you'll decide that it's time to go back, just copy the fort-containing save back into the savedgames folder.
The downside is that you're missing all the changes in the history that your adventurer managed to cause with his heroic actions.

EVERYTHING is a feature =D

I don't understand why in reclaim mode released goblins and trolls are friendly, and released "guests" and forgotten beasts are unfriendly. Isn't it a bug? I think it should be the other way around.

We call that feature "Lulling you into a false sense of security." The only reason the guests and forgotten beasts aren't friendly is because even dwarves aren't stupid enough to believe that.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Hm. That may be right. After one goblin axe lord killed the beast I thought he and his friends will sweep the floor with a cyclops and my dwarves will get mercenaries for free. Oh, how I was mistaken.
