How many pumps are needed to clear an aquifer?
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:27:01 am »

1 pump doesn't seem enough.
The ground isn't dry for long enough for the miner to properly dig.
This is my first game embarking on an aquifer map, and I finding it really troublesome to breach through the multiple aquifer layers.
I don't quite get the schematics on the DF wiki for pumps, so just asking if anyone can explain in a very simple manner how to dig through multiple aquifers via pumps.

1 per tile should be good. So if you want a 3x3 stairway down...
Code: [Select]
.%%XXX
.%%XXX
.%%XXX
should be good. I'm a total noob at pumps, though, so don't listen to me.  :P

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then youkill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.
Dwarf Fortress: So horrifying the players would rather talk about nice things, like Warhammer 40k.

just use an aquifer plug.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Aquifer#Cave-In_Example
But they only work for single layers.
I think I've struck a pretty deep aquifer layer here.

No, just mkae the plug big enough that you can dig down and make another plug inside the first one.

I've done it before.

I've had pretty good results with 1-2 pumps and aquifers, lately. Remember to smooth the aquifer's walls or to build artificial walls all the time, else the one pump won't be enough indeed.

The dwarves will cancel-spam a lot, especially if you have to construct walls instead of just smoothing the walls, but it is manageable.

As Lytha said, you have to block off the flow from the aquifer. That means stopping all surfaces that can produce water from doing so, either by smoothing (in the case of stones such as claystone) or constructing walls in front of the water-producing ones. Remember that natural ceilings within the aquifer layer will also produce water into a square, so you'll do best to make your way down in an inverted pyramid shape. Try to figure how many layers there are to the aquifer, and use that to figure how big the first pit should be.

I like flood gates rather than walls, so I can open it later to flood the entrance, but that's just me. Seems to cancel less too.

so smoothing and an inverted pyramid both work i see...
Guess that makes a good reason for me to embark with a decent engraver from now on.

Concentric cave ins are Fantastic for breaking through a deep aquifer.
