rock salt!?

So I embarked in an area that was said to have both shallow and deep metals but all there is is rock salt!(Im making a portal fortress so thats good I guess) I need metal. Can rock salt be eaten/traded to get metal?

No, rock salt is a sedimentary layer stone. Keep looking.

I guess you could make crafts out of it and trade them for metals.

Make sure to carve a few pieces into blocks, and place them in your pastures. Heck, throw one in the dining room too, just in case your dwarves' diet is low in sodium.

I did the same. I hate this new embark. Is there no way to get the mineral list back from before?

I had nothing but 30 levels of rock salt and marble, then changed to more flux stone. I finally got fed up and ran dfprospector. Nothing but copper and gold on the entire map.

You don't have cobaltite on the map by any chance? On a few of my embarks it appears that the site finder considers this to be a 'metal', which is in the modern world but has absolutely no use as a metal in dwarf fortress.

How much gold?
If tons, make crafts to get steel or some masterwork steel weapons
