chain a kitten at the bottom (and ensure it can't move with doors/walls or whatever) and you consistently get a successful landing....
Many have thought to weaponise this with floor hatches and fully equiped dorfs stationed far far above the kitten waiting for the lever pull...

Oh god! An Axedorf rapid deployment chute! That is awesome - got a barracks directly above my gatehouse and i've got animals chained up below - i'm so doing this. Only problem I see is making the military dofs stand on exactly the right spot. Would a  1x1 burrow work?

Dwarven ODST had been proposed but I think it's been abandoned since there's no reliable way to deploy them.

But at least after all the chaos, the weather cleared.

Phhhhtttt Who needs reliability when you got air dropping dwarfs  I'm getting right on this as soon as my magma fortress is done

\  I don't imagine them marching out there in a column and facing the enemy in a phalanx and using traditional footwork and precise blows to disable their target.  I figure they chug six beers, strap up and roll out with the intention of making something vomit.\

A single tile burrow on a hatch linked to a lever that another dwarf could pull would likely work perfectly.

(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

Would a squad of 5 survive the drop through a single chute? or does the poor noble kitty just work for one dorf? I guess !!Science!! will tell...

I think that kittentrampolines are one time use.

But so long as the first dwarf remains in position, he'll catch the fall of everyone else. So this means you better have a means of making sure your dwarf stays in that position. Also, units get stunned when they land like this, so make sure you aren't doing this directly into hostiles.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

the dwarf probably was standing on another animal and jumped off the last few seconds so he landed safely

Doh, there goes my Dwarf+Axe murder-hole idea.

You could deploy them into a 5x5 hole, with ramps along the outside, drawbridges on the inner eight tiles, and a kitten in the center:

z-1

z0

+++++++

Then drop the dwarves and lower the bridges when they're all in position.

I think ill just have some kind of ramp+drawbridge setup that ill deploy when there are enemies at the gate. An axedwarf squad jumping in through the ceiling would be brilliant though.
