magma not pumping reliably
« on: December 19, 2007, 11:03:00 pm »

Hmm this is wierd, ive seen people pump magma before, often leading to infinite magma bugs. Anyway i tried making a magma tower myself and it didnt work right.

The first time i built a pump beside a magma lake (only 2 levels deep) and i got a guy to start pumping. The pump filled this raised channel I made with no trouble. So after that test i started adding more pumps and linking windmills to them. For some odd reason the pumps apart from the first one didnt pump.

So i tried again, reloaded my blank save and sent an identical reclaim party. This time even the first pump didnt work. Its set up properly, and the square it draws from is in the right place and full 7/7 of magma.

Anyone else get problems?

I tested it. It seems that pumps will not draw magma from "raw" magma lake tiles. If you first dig a channel to extend the lip of the magma pool, the pump can then draw from it.

Also, in no combination/configuration i can come up with will the magma travel to Z-level 2

Did some further testing, it seems that the magma squares that didnt work with pumps were also considered indoors and underground because the magma is recessed into a mountain with a rock roof covering all but a small patch of it.

Indoors or not magma should still pump right? can someone verify this please.

It should still pump regardless of being inside or not, yes. I think veryinky had determined in a previous version that 1x1 magma tiles could not be pumped from, but a 1x1x2 (two 7/7 magma tiles on top of each other) could, and so could 1 x many magma channels. Is that inconsistant with what you were seeing?

Sort of. The tiles it cant pump from are listed in blue as "open space" under the look menu.

The channels I dug from which i can pump out of are listed as "obsidian" and "obsidian cavern floor"
