LP Recording Software
« on: May 05, 2011, 05:17:06 am »

So, I'm trying to record an LP but I keep getting issues with the actual recording itself.

When I try to record in FRAPs it cuts it up into one and a half minute chunks which is horribly irritating as I have no movie editting software. Other software I've tried doesn't seem to have any option to start the recording whilst on a screen and doesn't have the ability to record sound quietly whilst the microphone is being used etc.

Any advice on what software to use or what editting software to use? Tried Googling this, but it's really no help. Money is no issue here.

Thanks in advance, ladies and gents.

Ein yer avatar is creepy.

Also, you might have to use more then one program in conjunction.

Also, for editing, you're gonna need some sorta movie program.

CamStudio.org
+ lossless codec (fast compression means smoother FPS since the CPU isn't so busy turning it into the crappy default Cinepak or microsoft wossname... which are just the worst codecs ever. Also, lossless = best quality possible, which is a must if you're recompressing it anyway for uploading).

For editing, VirtualDub. Here's where you save as the codec you actually want (depends on where you're uploading the video, I guess. there are probably other programs that save to Flash native video for youtube)
Use 32 bit version, otherwise it won't recognize the input lossless codec.

I asked my father (he's a music tech lecturer at Cardiff University) what he'd recommend and he said you should probably look into Cubase if money is truly not an issue.  It's professional software, so it'll cost you quite a lot.

I've used this software myself on occasion and found it really efficient, intuitive and brilliant for sound quality.

Edit:  I'd also recommend you steer clear of the 'light' version, the name of which escapes me at present.

Out of curiosity, what kind of mic setup are you using?

2.Edit:  Logic may also interest you as a cheaper alternative, although I'd still recommend Cubase myself.  Logic always seemed a little too stripped down/over simplified and Apple-ised to me.
