DFreveal questions

I read in the wiki that reveal will loose the HFS, does this mean it will spawn but will stay put? So it's only a FPS drain?

If I save > reveal > load will the HFS still be loosed?

Unless the old reveal utility has been updated to work with the latest version, then you're going to be using the "dfreveal" tool that comes with DFHack, and that one will unreveal the map immediately before it exits in order to avoid spawning HFS. Without a path into your fortress, HFS will merely cause intense lag.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

That's just stupid.

Anyways, I had the same question, but thought I'd look like an idiot  :-[

I used to use reveal now and then to plan my fortress layout and look for needed materials but it ended up feeling way too cheaty- though it does seem like dwarves should have some method of prospecting rather than just carving tunnels out willy nilly (especially when it'll kill your pathfinding). After accidentally unpausing and waking up the HFS a few times I just started avoiding it whenever possible... but there is a pretty decent alternative! Just use stonesense and when you want a peek into the blackness, turn on the hidden squares (hotkey H I believe.) I do this mainly to find the second cavern layer if I've dug down deep and somehow managed to miss it- I think of it as dwarves sounding out the hollow space somehow to avoid feeling like a big cheat, but that's just me. You don't get to peek and see exactly what minerals you're looking at either, just the color, making it less of a spoiler tool.

I've forgotten to unreveal a couple times. Usually It's right after embark, because I use it to plan out the initial fort layout, but once I was dodging the caverns because I didn't want cave spores. Without any dwarfs to attack, the HFS will actually turn on itself, almost like livestock in a too-small pasture. by the time I wanted to let it loose, there wasn't any left.
