Quick question about evil biomes
« on: May 04, 2011, 02:06:58 pm »

I've been searing for a good embark for my next fort -- well, an evil embark actually. Having found a few promising ones, I have some questions before I decide.

1) Does a biome with dead trees/plantlife ever grow any new vegetation if grass is trampled and trees are cut?

2) If an evil map spawns undead creatures, does it only spawn them or can live ones turn up too? I'd like a shot at trapping and taming interesting, living creatures.

Dead trees/plants won't grow or regrow, though sometimes "dead" saplings are actually undead and will grow. There's usually some living flora in dead zones, though.

In undead maps, there's limitless supplies of undead but seems to be the same normal limited supply of living creatures. The vast majority of the time your animal spawns will be walking corpses, but not always.

Thanks. The concept of undead saplings growing up into trees is wonderfully appropriate for this game. ;) So I'd have a small shot at live beasties on an undead map ... hmm. Maybe I'll rather try to get one with living evil critters like ogres and harpies, as I heard that undead were made pretty wimpy anyway.

If you're specifically wanting werewolves, harpies and such, I believe that Terrrifying biomes are the way to go.

Various amounts of living and dead creatures can spawn in evil biomes.

For instance, I just went three years in a fortress fully in a terrifying biome, seeing nothing evil but a few dark gnomes. There were plenty of capybaras, turkeys, etc.

They are really just wolfmen for now. Actual werewolves are promised in the next update (at least the infectious part, maybe not the silver part). [Can you tell I am excited for that update?]
