Zooming to creatures in unknown areas

When you zoom to a creature (from U screen) in an unknown underground area (antmen etc.) it shows the creatures and reveals the unknown area.

The creatures shouldn't be displayed on the u screen if you haven't discovered the area to begin with.  Was the feature already revealed when you started?  Is it connected to the outside world?
