Question: From fortress mode to Legends mode

Would like to know if I have to go into retire fortress in order to see legends mode.

there is, or at least used to be a dfhack script called open-legends. you'd save your game just in case, then run it, do what you need to do, then quit

Well, in v50+ you can save to a new timeline, retire that timeline to check legends, then go back to the original timeline and the retire never happened.

Oh, I thought without retiring. It's always been possible to save the game, backup the save, retire, check legends, delete the save and restore the backup.

(I do NOT know if any of this is true for newer versions)

In 47.x, I copy the folder for the save, open that one and retire. I usually name the copy with a leg_ prefix, so I don't get confused which is which.
(I assume the new timeline thing does this in background?)
DFHack is great for exporting the legends data as XML files that you can open with a utility like LegendsViewer.
