Harvestable Bamboo
« on: April 29, 2011, 10:33:51 pm »

I know there are a bunch of threads in here that mention bamboo uses in game but there doesn't seem to be any sort of thread mentioning the harvesting of bamboo. My suggestion of something to add to the game would be the modification of bamboo to include it's harvesting and use in things such as furniture, practice weapons, traps, cages, crafts, ect.

Basically what it boils down to is the bamboo (being one of the strongest natural building materials) is treated similar to a tree. It can be cut/chopped down when it creates dense stands and then used by carpenters for construction needs. The bamboo can also be used for craft goods.

I want to know if any other Dwarf Fort fans think this is a good idea or not.

It's something that is almost certainly already planned, but is currently not easily done due to the way that grass, trees, and crops are organized in code.  When Toady gets around to rewriting the plant types, he is very likely to do this.

I hope so. Right now I'm playing a fort with very few trees but tons and tons of bamboo all around and I keep thinking to my self "Cut bamboo make stuff now!"

I think the problem is the categories and how they break down.  Bamboo is a grass, in game and in real life. But in-game all that can be done to grass is it can be eaten by grazers.

So if anything, bamboo should be changed to be a "tree" type object, I fully agree here.

Didn't Toady specifically mention Hay and Bamboo harvesting in the last DF Talk? (or maybe the one before it)

I havn't listened to that talk yet. But it would make sense since the livestock now require grazing areas.

But then the poor pandas have to eat plain grass!(assuming they can..)
