I will try to fortify the last tile, and hopefully shut some floodgates behind him, when he runs.

Speaking off which, the mechanisms I use to link the floodgates with levers, do they need to be magma safe aswel?
Yes.
Typical.
Can I tell my mechanic to use certain rock types? He seems to make all the mechanisms out of non-magma safe.
Burrows.  It can be as simple as 1 tile on the center of the mechanic's shop and 1 tile on the rock you want him to use.

This is the way I prefer to do it, for what it's worth.

To the OP: If you're feeling REALLY paranoid about saving your peasant who carves the last fortification, take a two level approach. Tap the magma one level ABOVE your pipes by channeling out the floor and building a magma safe grate for your dwarf to stand on. Then he just has to step back one square and the magma goes down the grate into the pipes with no need to run for it. Magma isn't pressurized like water is, so no need to worry about it flowing back up into your fortress either.

A fast dwarf makes a difference between life and death. I couldn't use my best engraver for this type of work, instead delegating it to a military dwarf who was more agile.

Personally, I find it far and away easier to simply pump magma up over the lip of the volcano, using a magma-safe stair case built down inside it, and then pumping up to a cut channel. Far less annoying and dangerous.
