How do you slow the game down?
« on: April 25, 2011, 09:28:32 am »

I'm getting huge waves of dwarfs every 45 minutes or so.  I have wild parties, and 20+ idlers.  Seasons are just flying past...

Everyone seems to talk about trying to keep their frame rate up, but I really need mine to slow down and chill out :(

Is there anything I can do to slow things down a bit so that I can get my dwarfs organized without too much time going past?

you could cap the frame rate
in data/init/init.txt change [FPS_CAP:100] to something lower

1. Get a male and a female cat.
2. Wait for catsplosion.
3. FPS problem solved.

This, its what I do (I keep FPS cap at 60).  I find it not only makes the game a lot easier to follow but also delays the point where your FPS starts to drop out.

I set my FPS_CAP to 30.  I never give two craps about pausing, cats, or water flows.  I use all the methods to simplify computation and keep FPS up anyways, set traffic orders, atom-smash unwanted stuff, use Rock Grinders to get rid of worthless layer stone, spay/neuter the pet population (with or without magma), etc.

I never die FPS death this way.

I suppose some would consider it unplayably low FPS... but they're just used to super-fast death I suppose.

Thanks guys :)

I cranked it down to 50 FPS and that seems a lot more manageable!
