the items are marked for melting, urist goes and gets them, and brings them to the magma smelter, and they cease to exist on my stocks menu, yet I still have 0 steel bars.

am i doing something wrong or is there something fundamental im not understanding here?

Melting only gives back a fraction of the material that the item was made out of. You will need to melt down between 2-10 steel items to get a steel bar.

Make sure all melting is done at one smelter, look here for all melting information.

If you want to be sure that melting works buy a metal cage and melt it - it will give one bar. Most other things need to accumulate some metal in a smelter before it adds to one bar.
