Elves: Silly dwarf, they want to remove our beautifull trees with magma. Don'T they know they are magma-proof ?
Dwarf : Are you? *Pull lever*
Elves : Ahhh shit.

It does reflect real life somewhat, but trees also survive being completely submerged in magma, and that does not happen too often in real life  8)
Trees also don't get submerged in magma very often...

What if you drop the magma directly on top of the tree?

No wait... It's so obvious...

THE ELVES HAVE STOLEN THE DWARVEN QUANTUM MECHANICS TECHNOLOGY AND APPLIED IT TO TREES!!!

Good thing they haven't perfected it yet :P

Nevermind lol, I'll just modify the files so my civ can use axes. and yes, it's elven.
Makes you wonder where those stinking elves get all their logs

they obviousy get nude, dance some kind of unholy dance with their elven songs around the tree, and then it drops a branch or two in front of them.

Buy, steal, or loot axes from another civ.  Humans, Dwarves, and Goblins are all allowd to use them.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

re-reading the OP, I realized we forgot one of the easiest ones. Take a carpenter, take apart the embark cart and you get 3 pieces of wood. 1 of those is used to make a carpenters workshop, 1 is used to make a wooden ax, and one is free to do whatever you want.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

Read: make charcoal to smelt that piece of tetrahedrite.

Dig out the ground under the tree, then cause a cave-in of the ground it's on.

Build a platform over the tree, then collapse the platform.

Build a ballista pointed at the tree and then fire the ballista.

None of these yields a log, but they'll destroy the tree.
Silly elves, you forgot the most important one!

MAGMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Magma is NOT working in this case.

Look, the point of the magma isn't to detroy the trees here, it's just...

...

MAGMAAAAAAAAAAAA

What I'm trying to say here is that around here, we don't need anything as insignificant as "a reason" for magma.

Is it impossible to make wooden training axes? Cause if your starting 7 brought a wagon, you can usually deconstruct it, use one log to make a carpenter shop and a second log to make a training axe, and go to town on the forest.
