Noob Adventurer - any tips to speed up Adventure FPS
« on: April 20, 2011, 05:37:39 pm »

Really, I've been playing DF on fortress mode exclusively up til now, having OD'd on standard roguelikes years ago, but I thought I'd take a punt with some adventurer stuff (my crappy laptop has a glitched graphics chip, and nukes itself if i put the actual video drivers in - DF is one of the few interesting games it can run).

But it's hell slow and laggy compared to how I've learnt to tweak fortress mode, I had to give it up. Any veterans have tips on making this bearable? btw this machine has 512MB ram, but it's not worth upgrading (due to the other faults) and I can't afford to replace my out of action main PC anytime soon.

Go into d_init.txt, and change [ADVENTURER_ALWAYS_CENTER:YES] to NO.  The viewing window will stop following you around, which should give you a bit of a speed boost.
