So I bought some grizzly bears and jaguar from some shady merchants. They had pointy ears and after I made my purchase I had them rounded up and summarily executed. But enough of that.

Is there a way to send the animals into combat, aside from assigning them to dwarves?

I don't think so.  War animals aren't sentient, they can't be directly ordered around.  I guess you could put them in a room with a drawbridge...  and open it whenever the gobbos come to play, but that's all I can think of right now.

You can assign them to a dwarf and have him act as a handler Then you can station them where you desire without leashing them.
