Without you, We Continue

So, I made a copy of my world and abandoned my current settlement. I wanted to check the status of the damned hoary marmot clown leading the local goblins, because I haven't finished with him quite yet. [Turns out, he's no longer their law-giver, which is why he hasn't been showing up on raids.]

Anyways, after learning what I wanted, I decided to check on ym current fort, Ardentwire. I scrolled through, reading this and that, then when I got to the very bottom, the last thing was ''The Lined Wire was formed in Ardentwire.'' This came after ''The Iron of Air abandoned Ardentwire.''

So, this means my dwarves decided to keep the city after I abandoned it. Does this mean I can make dwarven cities everywhere? Reform an extinct civilization by sprouting up new cities? I always thought 'abandoning' the fortress meant your dwarves left it empty.

If I'm not mistaken that refers to your abandonned fortress inhabitants uniting under a new name and starting to roam. They don't just scatter to the four winds. You might even find them in adventure mode I think.

Don't quote me on that though, I never did verify it myself.

I think it's random. Or if the abandoned fortress isn't at siege or doesn't have any FB lurking around - then the residents just change the name of the group and continue living without overseer. I had that happened couple of times.

Are you sure it currently happens? I mean that's exactly what I want to happen when I stop playing a fortress and makes it even more fun to make new ones around, roleplaying the Dwarf civilization towards supremacy (until the next goblin super horde appears).

Now that's what gives DF it's unique style. A living world that outstretches far beyond the game screen.

well I went back on adventure mode last night before I passed out [this morning] and the fortress was empty. Not a soul in sight, minue some goblins.

Like I said, the group starts roaming and does actually leave the fortress. I don't know where they go but I'm fairly certain they're somewhere.
