Arg! Death! My only weakness!
« on: April 16, 2011, 01:48:27 am »

I have a quick question about armor. My two military units are assigned the 'metal armor' uniform. I've made sure to make iron/copper/steel armor for whatever they need to fill the slots. lately i've been murder elf caravans, and they drop wood equipment. I was looking at my dwarves later, and noticed some of them sporting wood equipment when there's higher quality iron available.

Does wood count as metal? Why would they choos eit over metal, given their uniform?

Do the elves know something we don't?

Dwarven stupidity, then? That explains a lot of things...

Urg. I would just make a 'iron uniform' or steel, but I don't have full sets of either..

It seems to work better if you only use the generic armour types for trainee squads and then use the equip screen to give them the lowest priority when it comes to picking up stuff. For the professionals define your own armour type, all steel or whatever if you happen to have an abundance of something or just any metal if not, then set to replace clothing and exact match. That should stop them picking up elm shields flogged by the elves just because they're fancier than the perfectly serviceable bronze ones you've made yourself. As it's replacing clothing it's worth adding things like hoods, socks, cloaks, leather trousers and so on into the armour definition. Gives a bit of added protection and means the output from your clothiers and leatherworkers actually gets used rather than ignored by nudist dwarves.

Its CRITICAL you get rid of the hippy elf shrub items. The only thing a Hippy elf shrubs are good for are beds, other than that dwarven stone and iron is better.

The simple answer:  This is where "exact match" / "partial match" comes into play.

If you set the uniform to 'exact match' and specify a material, the dwarves will refuse to equip anything except that material.  But if you leave it as "partial match", then they will wear any material up to and including the specified material.

In the case of metal armor, with "partial" matching, they will start with cloth / wood / leather, then progress up through copper / bronze / iron / steel / candy as better items come available.  But if you had said "exact match" and specified "metal" armor, then they would start with copper and ignore any wood / leather / cloth / silk for that slot.
