different life stages and the jelly-fishman
« on: April 20, 2011, 01:33:32 pm »

So I recently found out about the amazing life stage f the jelly fish, I thought that it would be awesome to have creatures with such amazing lifecycles.

Yes, I will specifically focus on the jellyfish man. So when a jellyfish drops the eggs, the eggs grow into polyps. The polyps then afterwards grow bigger and then releases a mini jellyfish. But the amazing thing is that the polyp does not die. It stays there and produces more mini-jellies.

I would totally love to see creatures like this. Perhaps the jellymen could die when they sprout a jelly- so that would keep them not too overpowered.

Currently the only "stages of life" the game REALLY supports other then size increase is Egg and creature.

There are many creatures who could benefit from having stages (for example Antmen)

I know. Larva and stuff. That would definately need to be there. Though, I guess that would also require the antmen to have a huge hive with larva rooms and stuff...*Shrugs*

I've found this wanting, before, in various creatures I've tried to mod.  Different life stages could also be used in modding, creatively, to simulate things like war training or magical augmentation.

The easiest way I can imagine this is to have special castes for the creatures.  By specifying with some form of raw tokens that the caste in question is a life-stage and not a random chance caste, creatures would not be born post-larval.  Then, each caste that was a birth caste could have other raw tokens that state when they will turn into a different life stage.

Code: [Select]
[CASTE:LARVAL]
  [BIRTH_CASTE]
  [BODY:JUST:A:PLACEHOLDER:CAUSE:BODY:CODE:IS:HARD]
  [LIFE_STAGE:1:PUPAL]
  [LIFE_STAGE:2:ADULT_MALE]
  [LIFE_STAGE:2:ADULT_FEMALE]
[CASTE:PUPAL]
  [GROWTH_CASTE]
  etc...

Yeah definately. Anf you could define when the creature enters a stage. That would be awesome.

*Ok so this dwarf is 6 so that means he can fly and shoot flames*

I really like this idea. Many insects follow the same idea.

Hmm, actually now that I think of it, the idea of insectoid life stages and jellyfish life stages are quite distinct from each other.  Basically, Jellyfish breed, then their children become polyps.  Polyps reproduce asexually, and their children become ephyra, which grow into Jellies.

Jellyfish + Jellyfish -> Larva -> Polyp-> One Strobila -> Many Ephyra -> Jellyfish.

Well, they change from one creature to another. Which is what I was going for. Though I can see how confusion could have been extrapolated from my short post.

I think the confusion was mine, and I jumped the gun on the caste idea.  Although it would be excellent to implement insectoid larval stages, not so much for jellyfish stuff.

Thanks guys! The idea of the jellyfish man was this. I though, what if a jellyman cam to my fort and dropped eggs and they sprouted into polyps? Then there would be TONS of !!FUN!!
