At the moment, the Baron is pretty much useless. They used to start the economy, but that's been disabled for some time now. Nobody cares if he dies, unless they're one of those Noble Sympathizers we all hear rumors about.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.
You beat a man to death with his dick?

no baron, no baron mandates

you need mandates for your fort to ever cascade into a rollercoaster of fun

The mayor still mandates things.  Better yet, he gets elected because he's popular.  Wait until someone popular mandates candy cotton items and let the fun begin.

You never know when you might need a berserk dwarf to set loose somewhere.

I got lucky...my mayor demands nothing but zinc items.  We have 50,000 sphalerite.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

In my first fort I didn't pay attention to who I picked for a noble. I ended up picking a dwarf whose only preferences were for platinum and beds. He promptly got assigned to clean the forgotten beast cages, and died a tragic and possibly accidental death.
