Fish /aquatics able to get through wall grates
« on: November 22, 2007, 04:44:00 pm »

What the title says.

Fish (and likely other aquatic life) ignore wall grates and pass through at their leisure. I dont know if this is intended, but i imagine a grate as something that allows only rings and coins to pass through, being the size of about chainlink fencing. Wall bars a fish could get through easilly (being more like prison bars) but a grate?

I just find it odd that i put up something to stop creatures from passing through, and they get through anyways.

Maybe they blink like turtles and other small critters/vermin? (Which can teleport through walls)

Yeah, they do.

Didn't know that vermin could teleport through walls.

Here's why I think they blink/teleport around:

In my current fort, I've got farms underground right next to the brook. Turtles appear in there from time to time, and vanish again a second after appearing. The thing is, there's a solid wall between the brook's water and the farm. The only way to get to the farm from the brook would involve walking around 20 tiles in one direction, around walls and through doors, going down stairs, and walking another 15 or so tiles back towards the brook to get to the farms. Turtles *pop* into the farms 1-3 spaces from the brook's water, and then *pop* back out again (Theoretically, they *could* just be hiding, becoming noticed, and hiding again, but there's no way they walked 20 spaces away from the brook, down stairs, and back to get to the farms).

I had other indications from the 2d version:
I built a room for a cave spider to make webs, and put its cage in it. The room looked something like this:

O is a wall. D is a door. o is the cage or animal trap I freed the spider from.

code:

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
       D     O
       OOOO  O
          O  O
 OOOOOOOOOO  O
 O           O
x O a         O
 OOOOOOOOOOOOO

The x is where I spotted the spider shortly (somewhere between a few seconds and a minute) after he was let out of the cage.

Albeit, incorrectly.  You can't seen matter, energy, or information through a quantum tunnel.  ;)
