Individual training military

Hi,
I have a few military units. I have set their schedule to training with a min of 2 dwarves.
Now, they are in the barracks, training, but it is all individual training. How do I get them to spar with eachother?
And does it make a difference, wether they do individual or spar?

It'll make a difference, as they'll tend to increase their dodge and shield user skills at a faster rate. Also, I'm not entirely positive, but I think they won't spar until they reach a certain level in a weapon skill.

Some of my new squad's recruits started sparring quite early.

Is the alert set to active/training?

That's a common problem.
