I've noticed a lot of the bones and other usable animal parts in my refuse stockpile have been disappearing. I was planning on saving them for when I get a good bone carver, but it would seem I need to use them more quickly than I used to. The refuse pile is outside. Is there a way to preserve the bones, hooves, horns, and shells for longer periods of time?

Put your "useful refuse" (bones/shells/horns/skins/etc.) pile underground and your "useless refuse" (everything else, including rotting corpses) outside.

I have noticed useful refuse items (skulls, bones) in underground stockpiles will also sometimes disappear.  It may be related to climate and how deep underground the stockpile is.
