Unusable smelter?
« on: April 07, 2011, 12:05:49 pm »

I have a smelter that suddenly stopped working.
Everything's red in it now, so I can't use it.
What the circus is going on?

Do you have fuel? I've noticed that when I don't have fuel my non-magma smelter decides it's offline.

Oh, and magma smelters need at least 4/7 magma under one  or more of their outside 8 tiles.

Was it a magma smelter? If so, the magma level on the level below it dropped below 4/7. Alternately, have you run out of smeltable items?

I have lots of charcoal.
And it's not a magma smelter.
Also, I haven't run out of smeltable stuff.
There's tons of limonite near the smelter itself.

Only other thing I can think of..did you mass-forbid the charcoal accidentally somehow? Or have enough jobs in other workshops queued up that it's all more or less spoken for?

Did you forbid the stone that the Smelter is made of, or set that type of stone (eg: Marble) to "Economic use only" in the z-Stones menu? A Smelter made of Limestone, Marble, Dolomite, etc cannot be used if the Flux stones have been set for "Economic use only"... similarly, a Smelter made of Gypsum cannot be used if you've set Gypsum to be used only for making Gypsum Powder.

The charcoal is not forbidden, and the limestone it's made of is not for economic use only.

It's probably gotten confused as to what objects are available to it. If you tear it down and rebuild it (or use the job manager to add a task to it), it'll likely start working again.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Start using the job manager if you aren't already. Mass production, foo'.

I've destroyed it and built a new one and used the manager.
Neither worked.

The limonite didn't get forbidden somehow?

Just fishing at this point, but maybe one of the impassable tiles blocked the entrance to a coal stockpile?

Can't happen. A furnace's impassable tile can't block anything as the tiles on either side of it are both passable.
