Problems with grass and sand
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:05:42 pm »

I had a section of sand for collecting designated, but now cave moss has grown over it, and I can no longer collect sand!  Is there any way to remedy this?  I'm concerned if I pave over it, then remove the floor, it will destroy the sand by turning it into some kind of generic soil.  Anyone else run into this problem?

Make the area a pasture and assign a random grazer to annihilate the moss?

Two other options exist: make a dirt road to clear the moss, or have a sand wall designated as a collection zone. Either approach with roads will still result in having to reclear the area after awhile. I recently discovered that walls work just fine as a collection zone.

Also, sand is always the base layer; building, then removing, constructions and/or some (all?) buildings won't destroy the sand.

You can always designate it as a meeting area, so all of your idling dwarves will trample it.

Build a farm field over it.

A farm field will prevent things from growing on the sandy tiles even if the farm field isn't used.

You may as well farm that field while you're collecting sand from it, so you can just create a sand zone over your existing farms and it should work just fine.

Thanks very much; the problem seems to have resolved itself; it appears that despite the cave moss, my dwarves are still able to gather sand.  Not sure if this is a glitch, but I've added the adjacent sand wall to the zone just in case (I didn't know sand walls could also be used for gathering, thanks for the tip!).

Heh, I didn't either until I ran into a similar problem with collecting myself a week or two ago.
