My thoughts as I listen to Ellantris. (lotta spoilers here)
« on: April 05, 2011, 03:32:39 pm »

Right, so this is a book I've really wanted to read, but I live in the ass end of nowhere, so I can't get a physical copy. That leaves the internet.

Some searching reveals there's an audio-book version that has full sound effects and proper voice actors. sounds interesting. 19 hours the whole thing. hrm.

Right, so I have it now.

And I've listened to the first hour.

here are my thoughts.

And that's the first hour done. I probably won't listen to another tonight, but this is looking good so far. the voice acting is good, on a whole, as are the sound effects.

I'll write further as I get through the book.

Also, I'm seeing a very definite style here, where the author introduces all the main players in the first chapter, even if they aren't gonna meet till more than half-way through the book. not a bad thing, just a comment that it's recognizable.

I read the Mistborn Trilogy, is Elantris worth reading as well?

It's like a live-action book club. I actually wouldn't mind somebody streaming an audiobook while we make snide comments in a chat program.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Right got through the next section.

Continues with Big Priest Guy. First thing he does when he takes office is fire the old priest. also we learn that he really does want to avoid as much bloodshed as possible, and his country is going to invade if he fails. reminds me of avatar a bit.

Scene shift back to zombie prince, where we learn more about life in zombie-town. There's three local gangs, but nobody fights if they don't have to, because nobody heals.

Also, ZP's guide, who's a zombie big black guy, is revealed to be able to do magic, much to ZP's surprise.

BPG tries converting the king, king refuses, not believing that the armies backing BPG are any good. he's wrong, but whatevs. we'll see what happens later.

Window Princess and BPG meet each other from opposite sides of the throne room, BPG realizes that WP will prove more troublesome than the rest of the court put together, and WP, for her part, recognizes BPG to be a greater threat than a misogynist father-in-law, and concentrates her mechanisms on him. we don't yet find out what those are, yet, but I assume she is capable.

TBH I found Elantris to be entertaining, but obviously amateurish. You can tell it's the guy's first novel.

Perhaps, but I've run out of books of his to read, so II'm reading this.

also, the streaming thing was a goood idea, I might do that, but I'm not sure if I should start from the beginning for that.
