Feature exists. It's called Legends mode.

What?

I don't know what's so difficult about this idea? I understand the game lacks the code for this at present and toady has more important stuff to do.

Im aware of all that.

I really don't understand why this is such an alien concept for people to grasp. I think it's a pretty cool idea, you could set it to run when system idle process is started. It'd run kinda like seti @ home.

I only play legends mode

I also play on the longest history setting for hard mode.

For a start, it has no real value in DF. Secondly, it will take YEARS of programming to do, thus wasting valuble time that could be used on enhancing DF and it would also take a massive AI overhaul and thirdly, all of the constant actions would probably take up all of your FPS.

It's not that we view it as alien, it's that it wouldn't be worth the effort.

I agree it's not worth the effort . All self Playing AI would add another CPU hog. You'll also need to write  some kind of expert system that know how to play the game then debug the whole thing. It would take quiet a few development cycle and an AI expert or two.

I think it's better to invest in lowering the complexity of some algorithms. Yesterday I finished my path caching demo and after I perfect it ( hopefully with some feedback) we can ask Toady to insert something like it into the game. I'm going to try to implement a room dividing pathing optimizer (tougher to implement but has many advantages).

AI playing the game might not be as tough as it sounds but it involves a lot of work (orders of magnitude more work than optimizing).  The gain for people who like playing the game would be very minor.

On the other hand investing in optimizing the code would benefit everyone. When I see the words "Atom smasher" I think about dwarf fortress running on a netbook. The game is CPU heavy and I doubt Toady made the game to help Intel/AMD  sell new hardware.

... I'm running the linux version of DF on a (dual core, but that's irrelevant) atom 1.6ghz.
Its getting 30 fps on a 3yr old fort where I'm digging a giant borehole to the magma sea in order to construct my own volcano.

So its not as bad as you would think.
