How to get Dwarves out of Cages?

In a recent fight with a goblin, one of my dwarves ended up in a cage. 
I am trying to get said dwarf out of a cage.  I can't designate her for dumping, and telling the game to let her go results in her name being removed from the list of possible occupants, but she is still in the cage.  How does one get their dwarf out of the cage?
I have started from an earlier save to try to get her out three times, but I just can't figure it out...
She keeps starving to death...

Seems putting enough large creatures in with her causes her to pop out.  She died of thirst while walking to the liquids stockpile, but oh well, I shall go back again.

Build the cage, build a lever, link the two, pull the lever.

This destroys the cage.  I forgot to mention, that this cage was an artifact, from my first mood of the fortress, made by the character that also became my legendary miner later on.  I dared not destroy that one.  The person caught, however, was my legendary glassmaker/legendary furnace operator. 

Also, in frustration I did try that, but at the time when I saved, there wasn't enough time for the mechanic to make the three gears and install them all before she died of thirst.

Dig a one-tile pit next time and pit her.

Designate a drinks stockpile next to the cage, repeat what freed her the first time?

Levers deconstruct the cage building, the cage itself isn't destroyed and it's contents are fine. I've done it before.
Unless that is a new bug.
