If I have wounded animals after a fight is there anything I can do to nurse them back to health?

You can't give them medicine or anything.

They either survive on their own, or they die. They commonly die of infection.

OK...we'll see then.  Fido's in pretty rough shape after taking on the Goblin Mace Lord.

Enable the Animal Care task on whatever dwarf it is assigned is the best hope you can give it. I had a skilled animal care dwarf once bring a war elephant back from having a broken skull, bruised spine, and damaged feet. The elephant lived on to kill 3 or 4 more goblins before dying

Animal caretaking is bugged and doesn't work.

There is nothing in the game as of 31.25 that provides healthcare of any kind to animals in your fortress. They'll show up on the health screen requesting diagnosis, but since they can't be healed with the usual dwarf skills, they're on their own. I've had three-legged dogs guarding my fortress before.

They heal from natural healing, nothing more. Animal caretaking is indeed useless.
