[38b-mac] F-keys on the mac
« on: February 24, 2008, 05:19:00 pm »

Yay, mac!

Minor nuisance: the F8 through F11 keys on OSX are usually reserved for desktop navigation things (spaces and expose).  Remapping isn't hard, but changing the default would be nice.  I usually remap F9 to F1, for example.

System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> "Use all F Keys as standard function keys".

That's a workaround, not a solution.  It changes the window manager, rather than the application.  A far better workaround: escape, key mappings, etc.  Then I still can use my F keys as Jobs intended.

A real solution: change the defaults so it just works.  Toady has already indicated willingness to do this: the key is F8 on mac, rather than F9 on windows (sadly, F8 recently got stolen for Spaces).  The full-screen toggle is F11 on both, which is an issue on mac.

I've never been clear on the distinction between F9 and space anyway.  Why do the trade depot and the world creation screen use F9?  I can sort of see it for the manager screen, I guess.
