Since people have been asking for Site Finder (and viewable embark map features) to be restored to its 40d functionality for almost a year now and that hasn't happened yet, I figured I'd suggest approaching the problem from a different route. I think that a better solution would be an option to export maps of rock layers. Either we could choose from a list of specific rock layers, or there could simply be map export options for the major layer types: Sand, other soil, sedimentary, flux, extrusive, intrusive, and metamorphic (flux would of course blend the sed and meta rocks but the flux token should simplify things).
Also, exporting the locations for HFS sites would be really, really nice. The last three days I started up DF, I was spending every session just embarking, looking for HFS fortresses, finding none or discovering other problems with the site, and repeating. Very, very tedious and somewhat unnecessary, especially considering we used to be able to see HFS from the embark map in 40d. I actually went back to 40d briefly just for the relief of being able to know things about a site before embark, but then found out that you really don't appreciate 2010 until you go back to 40d. Thank you Toady, thank you so much for making the dwarves finish what they're doing if they get thirsty/hungry/tired. Don't know how we stayed sane before that.
Finally, a map of all magma pipes, not just volcanoes, would be great. Ideally, they'd be color-coded according to depth (surface, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd caverns)
All of this, aside from the rock layers, we had to some degree in 40d. Bringing this back to the embark map/finder or legends would make site selection a lot more streamlined and less time consuming for those of us who are looking for specific things in a site.
