Crossbow dwarves and training them
« on: April 02, 2011, 12:56:29 pm »

Alright I have no bother training up regular dwarves to legendary status in skills but with Crossbow dwarves I cant even get them to go to practice often enough.

Any one have any tips on training crossbow dwarves?

And before you say put live targets in front of them I mean for them to shoot at the archery range. Also am i the only one who has so much trouble when they switch from training bolts to combat bolts?

Crossbow dwarves don't really need training. Just stick them in front of a siege and let them plink away.

Uhm, set up targets, properly define the practice room from the targets, including direction of firing. Set up ammo stockpiles in the ranges. Wait. It really is pretty simple, and as long as you have constant bolt production, you don't need to micromanage at all.

Training is pretty slow by nature. The rate at which they fire bolts will mean that many times they'll run out of training ammunition.

A few hundred bolts for each is sufficient for battle-readiness though. As a previous poster mentioned, they train much much better in sieges. Well, as long as they have armor.

To create a marksdwarf, follow the following steps:
1. Buy/make a crossbow/quiver
2. Build a archery target, designate its length, direction in which you want it to be fired at.
3. Produce some practice bolts.
4. Make up a new uniform template, with no items
5. Make a new squad, assign the archer to it. Assign the new uniform to the archer. Then assign the
dwarf a crossbow, on the equipment list. The quiver is automatically assigned.
6. Assigning supplies are optional. If you do, they will need a flask(carry drink) and a backpack(carry food)
7. Designate the archery range to that squad(T)
8. Assign bolts to the squad, multiples of 25, material of your choice,(C and T) for now
9. Beware, hunters are automatically assigned a bolt quota. If no hunters exist, remove the bolts
    assigned to them.
10. To help out the archers, create a ammo stockpile . Then make another, forbid metal, place one near the range then have it take from the first one.
11. Make sure he is on the Inactive schedule, so when he is not busy, he should head straight for the
     range.
12. Remember, it takes loads of bolts to train a archer. Once they get really skilled, should only target
practice enough to keep skills from getting rusty. This technique will save practice bolt raw material
supplies. This should get your archers practicing. Advanced archery tips is another subject

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
