Urist McDwarf was cramped lately
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:03:35 pm »

Simply put, give dwarfs an unhappy thought if they have to share a tile with more than one other dwarf at a time. This would encourage players to open up their fortress a little, and would add a drawback to one tile danger rooms. The severity of the thought could be determined by a dwarf trait (not sure if there's already one that would cover this...)

What do people think?

It makes sense to me. The idea might need to be developed a bit more though.

Maybe also the length of time, they are forced to spend... If they spend a few seconds passing someone in a narrow hall it is far different than if 10 of them are stacked on a single tile for months at a time.

I agree with profit. Without an AI rewrite dwarves would pass over each other way to often. Other then that, seems like a good idea. Perhaps when dwarves start wearing clothes again they can get negative thoughts from stepping on piles. Or for stepping through stockpiles on the way to a job. Stepping on items in general should trigger some sort of delay.

Well really, IT 000, this WOULD be sort of a rewrite of the AI.  A minor one but something that I can already see comming.  Having to share a tile with another Dwarf would cause a small level of unhappiness.  That would include being in the dining room, stairs, hallways, etc.  What this would do is give the player incentive to give dwarves multiple ways in and out of places, and to build larger spaces.  Possibly, having open space above them would mitigate this negative thought.

Because we Dwarves value the wide open spaces...

I like fortresses because they are still underground.

Or maybe they want to share a tile with another dwarf...

Wink wink, nudge nudge.

We'd have to have a way to carve out ceilings or else that would be way to bothersome.
