There's a reason why I've never used that word pejoratively, either.

I'll admit to using both once and a while in self-parody, especially online (IRC is detrimental to your social skills, people.) It's hypocritical but I don't think it should be used that way. Mental disabilities are a sensitive issue, very difficult for the people involved to deal with (both those afflicted and those that support them), and I have to agree that using 'gay' to mean something generally bad is a little on the oppressive side - not that it's necessarily always used with that meaning, but it kind of perpetuates a cultural disrespect towards homosexuals. When it's no longer used for them, I think it'd be fine, but in the mean time it's a bad idea if you have any desire to see things change.

Seems that the point is that the word is charged with ill intent. At least for what I'm debating, if you happen to attack my points with something irrelevant that is hardly my fault.
And I completely stand by that point.  The sentence is offensive (or charged with ill will, if you like) regardless of whether you intend to be or not.

Beyond that, it helps to ingrain the attitude.  If you learn from a young age that "gay things are bad", then later find out that some people are gay... it's not much of a logical jump, is it?

the society suddenly decides that max does it wrong, and from then on "pulling a max" becomes synonymous with failure. max fights the good fight and the society retracts the claims that max does it wrong, but his name is perpetuated as slang for a failure

i want you to picture that max. now imagine he's white...

Like John, Dick, Randy, Pansy, Prissy?

Okay, none of those are failures in particular, just regular negative things, but I think they carry the point across.

what if you those names carried a negative connotation because it was your name at the time people hated you?
