had this happen to 7 dwarves and 2 dogs (immigrant death trap really) all in 7/7 water

they all somehow learned to swim

seems kinda ironic

if i need someone to dig a channel, they fall in a river and drown

if i need someone to fall in a river and drown, they learn to swim

In the previous version, I remember having dwarves that I began with proficent swimmer being able to survive being covered by 7/7 water. They were completely unable to move, however, and eventually died of dehydration, despite being enveloped by fresh water.

If there is no roof, animals (and dwarves) just swim on top of the water. That they can swim forever without getting tired is kind of silly though I guess.

if you build a floor over the channel then they can't come up for air and they will drown (at least in my experience).

I once had a melancholy metalsmith (failed mood) throw himself into a pond. However, he learned to swim and refused to drown himself.

He died of thirst.

I've seen animals (actually, wolves, to be specific... nice coincidence) on a river in winter when it was frozen, it thaws, they fall down and move around in the water... but their names do not have that blue background that you get when your guys are in water (like, say, a channel that flooded). Does this mean that they're not considered to be in the water, or does that only show up if the creature is drowning?

That was back in 33a.

Hmm.

I drowned my entire fort in 33a to celebrate the release of 33b. All Dwarves drowned, as expected. I have not tried in 33b though, and don't really want to...   :D

No, river as in 3-screen-high-band-across-the-top-of-my-map river.

With open space above it, not brook tiles.
