Why don't combat reports mention death?
« on: March 29, 2011, 06:20:18 pm »

Kind of a minor nuisance but when I read a report its sometimes not clear if that creature is actually dead so then I have to find them and see if they are dead or not.

Doesn't it display "X has been struck down"?

It only says that if it's one of your animals/dorfs.
Generally, if it says something like "x strikes y in the head, sending the severed part flying in an arc" or "jamming the skull through the brain" or anything to do with the brain, really, then that's instant death.
Otherwise, with bleeding/drowning/suffocating, there's no way to tell.

If it ends with beheading, smashing of the brain or unconsciousness, they are almost certainly dead.

Ive assumed that when I saw "smashing of the brain" on a goblin only to find him leaving off the map's edge.

I agree, it really needs to have the "X has been struck down" or "X has succumbed to bleeding" or whatever.  They aren't always dead after a single stab to the brain as I discovered a couple days ago.  My militia commander stabbed a hippie in the head with her spear: ... jamming the the skull through the brain and tearing the brain ... A major artery has been severed by the attack ... the +iron spear+ has lodged firmly in the wound ... twists the spear in the wound.  All of that happened three times in a row, with the elf moving about four squares before finally dying (probably from the blood loss of his two severed hands).

Its nice what 9 months of sparring (not a danger room) with a training spear can do to a person with zero spear experience. :)

Zepave Dawnhogs the Butterfly of Vales the Marsh Titan ... was taken out by a single novice axedwarf and his pet war kitten. Long Live Domas Etasastesh Adilloram, slayer of the snow butterfly!
Doesn't quite have the ring of heroics to it...
Mother: "...and after the evil snow butterfly was defeated, Domas and his kitten lived happily ever after!"
Kids: "Yaaaay!"

I would expect this to be fixed at the same time as 'kill' orders automatically cancelling when the target is dead.
