Soldiers won't attack wild animals

Several times I've watched military dwarves just stand there and watch beasties go by, when they're on duty and set to chase opponents and harass wild animals. Sometimes they start attacking them, only to stop and go back to their post once the creature gets a yellow or red wound. Generally this isn't a problem, but just now I lost a champion wrestler while I wasn't looking because he just stood there and did nothing while a giant cave swallow pecked him to death  :(

i have seen dwarves ignore unconscious animals/mobs but not fail to run up to one that was walking around
