Animal Fortresses?
« on: March 27, 2011, 06:34:14 am »

Whats wrong with my worlds when all of the human fortresses are full of random animals and there are no soldiers at all. I've had this problem since 31.19 or something like that and that occurs in every world i gen? I usually use default large region world but it has also happened on custom worlds and default pocket world.
its quite annoying because i cant recruit any1 into my party so im forced to travel alone and on daylight.

Listen to DF TAlk sometime, man.  Toady already talked about this.

He doesn't know what's happening yet, but he's looking into it.

I like fortresses because they are still underground.

I don't think they are empty because the animals are there. Rather, the animals are there because it was empty to begin with (ie. it was either destroyed with siege during world gen, or the population starved off entirely, the latter was enabled at .19 and is causing lot of depopulation atm). There seem to be quite a few wild animals milling around in entirely abandoned towns as well. I haven't found ghost hamlet yet.

You can make this less severe by generating a world with more favourable population to sites ratio. I don't run large regions myself, but those should probably have minimum of 12000 people alive at the end generation using default setting. Discard the ones that aren't, or try to change population caps in parameters. You could also set it up to generate more plains and hence more space for humans.

You have found an abandoned fortress. Longer history games tend to have more of those as empires rise and fall.

I created a max size world with 1,000 years of history and every fortress that I've seen so far has been abandoned/destroyed. If you sit around and ask a random nearby villager about Surroundings then you'll sometimes get a historical date of when such and such destroyed a nearby fortress.
