What to do?
« on: March 22, 2011, 03:03:17 am »

So I started a new adventurer, and decided to just go around exploring and stabbing things to death since I can't do any quests, but I've run into a couple small problems.

First, I started with a scimitar, and haven't decided if that's better than a longsword or whatever.

Second, I can't find any companions, so a paranoid fear of boogeymen has me clinging to towns.

Third, all the 'fortresses' near me all seem to be empty, inhabited only my rabbits and turkeys, and I'm getting tired of killing them.

1. No it's not. It's about like that: short sword = scimitar < long sword < 2-handed sword
2. Keep searching. They are harder to find in this version. If I'm not mistaken, starting with several points in empathy will ease your search.
3. That's normal in this version. It doesn't mean there are no inhabited castles, there are just so few that you should not bother searching for them. Once you did enough quests for peasants they will tell you where to find any nobles.

Well, thats the thing. I only see peasants and mechanics and stuff. No hammermen or pikemen. And I can't do quests for peasants, because almost every time I ask about services, the game freezes.

Peasants and mechanics are sufficient, at least they always were for me. Soldier companions are mean kill-stealers anyways and all you really need are human shields.

So, the game freezes?? That's not good. Do you have the newest version? Any mods? What's in the errorlog?

If you can not solve this problem, try to ask about the surroundings.  If they say things like "X the hammerman is there" or "Y the night creature consort is there", memorize the place, search for it on the [Q]uest map and kill the foe. You will still get credit for it by the peasants.

Yeah, newest version. .21

No mods, I prefer to play vanilla. Less hassel that way. I have no idea, don't know where to find the errorlog. I put another thread up earlier with a picture of what it does.

And what? I can't get any of the normal people to follow me. They ALWAYS tell me ''I would... rather not.''     And the freeze thing made me paranoid about talking to people, but they normally say  ''Soandso is here. People founded it.''

The errorlog should be in the Dwarf Fortress folder. If it's not there then it hasn't been created yet which means this is no bug that would be noted in it.
Try genning a new world. If the bug is still there I really can't help you. Submit it on the bug tracker then.

You can get normal people to follow you. Try asking like an hundred or start a new character with all attribute point in empathy.
''Soandso is here. People founded it.'' is the norm when asking about surroundings but every now and again you will get one of the lines I talked about. Just keeping asking the same person over and over again.

You need patience. This is dwarf fortress. You need to be relentless to have any success in dwarf fortress.

Well now it's rather moot. I tried to explore, and it said I found a lair. I went inside and was immediately and brutally murdered by a  cyclops.

I have the worst luck.. next guy couldn't find a companion, so I got swarmed by boogeymen.. ran into a huge group of bandits.. they fought each other and I caught the leader ina  1v1 duel... killed him, only getting hit once, then I took an arrow to the face and died.

It was, lol. It was pretty neat having an uninterrupted one on one fight with the leader guy, with his henchmen and the boogeymen fighting all around us.

In worlds with lots of history, there are going to be a fair number of abandoned fortresses and ruins. As for getting others to follow you, it really all depends on your skill level. If your little known, of course your not going to get too many followers.

Even when your well known, not everyone will follow you, though it gets far easier to find followers.

As for weapons, it all depends on what you want to do. Silver war hammers are the most lethal weapon you can get hold of against armored foes, and steel battle axes against unarmored targets. If you want to just deal raw, internal damage, grab a spear or a pike.

I prefer a two handed sword, as it gives you slashing, piercing, and blunt options.
